TIPS:
  • Categorize! If you intend to allow people to use your free avatars at deviantART, you can help people find them more easily if you add all your free (50x50, under 15kb) avatars to the following category:
      ○ Customization > Icons > Avatars > deviantART
  • Say It's FREE! To reduce the number of times you will be asked, "can I use this?" always state in all your free avatar titles and/or descriptions whether or not people may use your work. This will help everyone avoid any hassles or confusion. Even something as simple as the word "free" will help deviants know that they can use your general use avatar. Here are some handy plz accounts to help make it look more official if you like:
      :iconyouareplz::iconallowedplz: :icondonotuseplz::iconmyartplz: ○ :icon YouArePlz::icon AllowedPlz: (no spaces)
  • Tell Users How! To reduce the number of times you will be asked, "how can I use this?" add the following FAQ to the descriptions of all your free avatars:
  • State Your Terms! Tell people your terms of use, your rules. A lot of avatar artists consider their free avatars a lot like stock artists feel about their stock photos used in other people's art. Many free avatar providers seem to like some or all of the following rules:
      ○ Credit in journal or signature
      ○ Comment and/or add to +favs
      ○ Get permission (note: asking doesn't mean getting)
  • Keep It Together! Create a "Free Avatars" folder in your gallery. Keep all of your free avatars in the folder. Then edit the folder with your terms of use. This makes finding free avatars in your gallery an easy, one-stop experience for users. To make things easier on you, don't change the name of this folder, or it will result in dead links when you share your folder in your journals or signatures. Consult our tutorial to learn how to make, edit and use a "Free Avatars" folder:
  • Share! Now tell your friends about your free avatars and ask if they have time to add your link to their journal to help you spread the word. Members, keep the link to your "Free Avatars" folder in your journal, too, and keep the link to the Free Avatar Project in your journals or signatures. We'll do some of the work for you if you send the link for your "Free Avatars" folder to the club. (To avoid dead links, please always tell us right away if you change the name of your folder!) To make links:

This journal entry used to be about changes made at the club. Now it's for tips and advice on how to get your free avatars seen and used! Comments from any later dates than this one should hopefully start the discussion.
